My Top 5 Books To Read This Halloween

If you don't know what book to read this Halloween season, I have five suggestions, directly taken from my favorite books shelf. They might not be full-on horror, but they're quite sinister and eerie.

1. The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
A girl finds a bundle of old letters in her dad's library, all written to a certain "My dear and unfortunate successor." If you dive into this story, you will find yourself travelling through Eastern Europe in old fashioned trains, dusting off old books in libraries and, best of all, immersing in vampire lure. This is quite a long book with its 704 pages, but I personally wish there was more to read when I got to the end.

2. Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
A recent read, this book grabbed me by the wrists and would not let go of me until I turned the last page. Gillian Flynn is now one of my favorite authors. This is a story about a reporter who goes back to her hometown to investigate a murder and a possible kidnapping. But the main character is so grim herself that you don't know which way to turn. Here's my review in case you want to know more about it.

3. A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby
If you're not in the mood for something dark this Halloween, this is a good option. It's dark, but the dark has humor in it. Four people decide to commit suicide on New Year's Eve. They all have their reasons and they're all a bit insane. It all ends up being quite an adventure. You can read more about it here.

4. The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
If you enjoy reading and writing, and also creepy stories, I think you would like this one as much as I do. A young woman finds a letter (I know it's a pretty similar start as The Historian) from a bestselling author who wishes the main character to write her biography. Her tale ends up being much scarier than what was expected and it's her last story, never included in her famous book Thirteen Tales of Change and Desperation.

5. The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins
A Gothic Victorian novel is always a good choice for Halloween. In this one, a series of narrators develop a tale that starts in a London road, where a woman in white is seen. This book is eerie, menacing and one of the best detective novels for those who like the slow, delicious pace that lets the reader savor each moment.
